The SINO-EUROPEAN EDUCATIONAL MISSIONS 1875-86
In the 1870s the Chinese imperial government sent two educational missions to the west, one group to the United States under the well known Yung Wing, the first Chinese graduate of Yale University and a second one under Prosper Giquel to Europe. Ironically the American educational mission which ultimately failed is quite well known, indeed at least three books have dealt with the topic while the more successful Sino-European Educational Mission is much less known. With that in mind, I am uploading a pdf of an article I wrote on the subject some years ago to make it easier for researchers to have access to the material. The article was originally published in Asia Profile, vol. 16, no. 5 1988
